Tips For Putting Fragile Items Into Storage

Blog

Do you have items you need to put into storage for a while? Are you concerned because some of these items are more fragile than others? As long as you follow some best practices for properly storing fragile items, you should be able to keep the items in storage for the long term without worrying about potential damage. Here are some tips to keep in mind when putting fragile items into a storage facility.

Don't Skimp On Packing Materials

If you want to properly pack and store fragile items, you need to make sure you have the right packing materials for the job. Don't just rely on newspapers or whatever you have lying around the house. Stock up on bubble wrap, packing peanuts, proper packing tape, and other essentials at a department store, or ask your local storage company if they offer supplies. The right materials can ensure better protection for your fragile items as you pack and then transport the items to the storage facility.

Ensure a Snug Fit

When putting fragile items into a box prior to transport, go beyond simply wrapping the item. You will also want to make sure there is not any free room in the box for the wrapped item to shift or move around. This is where additional bubble wrap or packing peanuts or styrofoam can come into play. You want to prevent the sliding of the item within the box as you pick it up and move it or transport it on the moving truck.

Consider Climate Control

Is your item fragile not just physically but also because of how it might react when exposed to a certain temperature or level of humidity? You might want to look into a local storage facility that offers climate control. This will allow you to keep the storage unit at the ideal temperature for the items that are inside. The extra cost of a climate control unit may be well worth it if it will help preserve a family antique or a piece of art.

Heavy to Light

Once you arrive at the storage facility, come up with a plan for how you want to stack the boxes containing your fragile items. You should always put the heaviest boxes at the bottom and then lighter boxes on top. If you are storing both fragile and non-fragile items, you might want to label the fragile boxes and put them off in their own corner or section so there is no confusion when it comes time to pick up or go through the boxes in the future.
